And on Pern ...
The time is 18:21.
It is evening of the fortieth day of winter.
It is the twelfth Turn of the Tenth Interval.
It is a winter evening.
Main Hall and Ballroom
The ballroom's vast space is simply and tastefully decorated, combining images and materials from many parts of Pern. Opposite the main entrance, a broad balcony is supported by pillars of the finest northern marble; polished to glassy smoothness, they contrast the toning blues of the walls. A staircase of the same stone rises in sturdy flights to the upper level. The high vaulted ceiling with its round wrought-iron window is white, brightening the room, while the varnished floor is the deep red-brown of a Lemos hardwood. High on the west wall, a large 'mural' shows a map of Pern framed by images of harper life and symbols of the Craft, while the bright 'tapestry' opposite offers an informal scene. Glowbaskets rest on marble stands of different heights, turned to give both direct and reflected light, while carved stone benches along the walls provide places to sit for those attending functions, or simply wishing to rest. For everyday use, rush matting protects the most frequented parts of the polished floor.
You see Leyte and Callie here.
Ayla is here.

Sara walks out of the harper office.
Evening has hit the Istan Harper Hall and Alesa is busy supervising the evacuating Harpers. Everything that's too big to carry a dragonback, such as the harpsichord, for example,is being secured, pushed into locked rooms and covered with soft cloths. "You two!" she says, gesturing to two burly male apprentices who are playing stickball in the corner. "There's still boxes that need to be lifted to the courtyard. Work now, play when we're all safe!" She tsks tsks under her breath and sighs, feeling fatigued.
Ayla looks around as she walks in, her eyes drooping a little. It's very easy to tell the rider hasn't had much sleep. Blue eyes scan the room until they land on the woman clipping out orders. She walks up to the woman and reaches a hand out to tap her on the shoulder. "Uhm, excuse me, are you the one in charge of things here?" She tries to clear her vision a little by blinking, attempting to wake herself up a bit. It would not do if she were to fall asleep on duty.
Alesa whips her head around, suspiciously, but then realizing its one of the riders from the weyr she had asked for. "Ahh, brownrider!" She bows, correctly identifying the knot on the woman's shoulder. "I am Journeywoman Alesa, thank you for coming so soon. I see you look about in my situation..fairly well fatigued, yes?" She cracks a small tired smile. "We're moving a few boxes of records to the courtyard, and need them and a few more apprentices moved to Fort Hold. How much can your dragon carry..and do you need some klah?"
Ayla sighs in gratitude. "A cup of klah would be most appriciated. And you can call me Ayla, I'm the wingleader for the Skyraider wing at Ista. I figured I should come check things out firsthand before I decided how many riders to provide to the hold." She looks around the room and shakes her head. "I think everyone is going to be tired for a long time. And as to my dragon, Jhakk's a /big/ boy I'm sure he could handle quite the load."
Sara hurries out of the Instrument Workshop. She and Journeyman Edsel had just finished stowing the things they would not be taking into safe, or so they hope, places. He had just sent her to find Alesa and see if she could help elsewhere.
Alesa grins. "Well met, Ayla. Sure, we can get some klah." She whistles loudly, and Koeseran comes running. "Yes ma'am?" "Apprentice, can you please get this rider a mug of hot klah? A /large/ mug by the looks of it? Ah..make that /two/, please." Koeseran nods, and runs to the kitchens. Soon he is back with two steaming mugs of klah and has only spilled a tiny amount of it on himself. "Thank you. Take a break, and get something to drink, you look as if you might pass out." She nods over at Ayla. "Good to hear. We don't want to overtire the dragons." And to Sara. "Apprentice Sara, good that you reported to me just now. I believe you are in one of the groups being relocated to Fort, yes?" She flips about in her checklist. "Yes, it says so right here. I think Brownrider Ayla here is going to be your ride."
Erikkhan steps though the french doors of the Artists' Workroom and into the large Main Hall.
Ayla takes the steaming mug with a greatful smile. She turns when the apprentice comes in and grins, after taking a large sip of klah. She nods her head at the girl and takes another sip. "I don't think you could easily tire Jhakkarath, I never can." She gives a low throated chuckle and continues sipping at the life saving drink in her hands. "If it won't be an inconvenience, I would lke a chance to rest before we begin the evacuation procedures? I've been on the go for a couple of days."
Erikkhan walks in, ticking off some kind of list in his head, but he soon starts muttering to himself. "...paints, easel, brushes, chalk, lead pencil..." And the list goes on. so absorbed in his thoughts he is, he doesn't notice th large crowd of people in the room, or the presence of his rider cousin either. His gold peers out from beneath his hair and chirrups a cheerful hello, as if nothing in the world were wrong.
Alesa nods. "Yes, Sara, your mentor Edsel should also be going too. " And to Ayla, a grin is given. "Well, good. We are very grateful for the help of dragons and riders, and don't want to be too big a burden." She ahhs. "Yes, if you want to nap for some minutes, you can take an empty cot in the dormitories, here." She hands her a permission note. "Sara can you show Ayla the direction to the women's dorms? This letter should be shown to the guards on the staircase, they should let you through with it."
"Of course ma'am. Follow me please?" Sara gestures to the women's dorms and will start moving once the Dragon rider begins to follow her.
Ayla nods. "Thank you so much." She clings to her mug and sips some more. She stares at the apprentice, ready to follow her; but her attention is caught by something else. Her blue eyes navigate over Erikkhan's form and her jaw drops. "Erikkhan! What are you doing here? Aren't you posted at the weyr?" Her voice raises an octive with every question. She's a bit angry with him, and it shows in her eyes.
Sara stops and hesitates, then decides to just be calm and wait for the dragon rider to finish her conversation. Quietly she wonders what the connection between the rider and Erikkhan.
Erikkhan lifts his head at the sound of his name and is visably shocked to see his cousin standing before him. "Ayla?" He shakes his head to clear it and stands up straight. "I am, I came home for a visit before this happened. I needed to stock up on supplies and see a few people. Are you here for the evacuation?" He stops walking when he reaches the 'social' circle of people.
Alesa flutters her eyelids and puts her hand on her head. Suddenly dizzy, she sits down on the stage corner with a THUNK. She has put her klah mug next to her person and is sitting there with her head in her hands. "I'm going to take a little time to rest and not think at the moment," Alesa says, weakly.
Ayla looks back at her generous hostess and smiles. "Aye, you look as if you need the nap more than I. And thank you so much for your hospitality." She turns back to her cousin and smirks. "All right then, and where are you going now?" She turns to alesa. "Is he also going to Fort?"
Sara glances over at Alesa. "Ma'am, can I help you to bed as I direct the dragon rider to the dormitory?"
Erikkhan shrugs. "I don't know yet." he stands there looking purplexed and pets his gold. He sighs, he's lost track of the list in his head. He looks around and spots Sara, and waves. He looks over to Alesa and a look of pity crosses his face. This ordeal must be trying on her.
Alesa shakes her head, and finds a pillow that was dropped from a stage set as it was moved outside. She lays her head on it and is lying on the stage. "Nah, I'll rest here for a few minutes. Need to still keep an eye for people stealing our stuff. Even apprentices try to pull one over but if I'm in the room, its less likely."
Sara waves distractedly at Erikkhan. She'll take care of the rider then go fetch Edsel. He would need some sleep himself before they left.
Ayla seems a little dissapointed by the answer, but shrugs it off quickly. She turns to Erikk and sighs and shakes her finger at him. "You keep yourself in one piece you hear?" She turns back to Sara and smiles, sipping at her klah. "Please though, I'm being rude. Lead the way please. I think I'm going to take a note from Journeywoman Alesa and have a nap."
Erikkhan nods and wanders off, disappearing into another room.
Erikkhan walks with an arrogant step to the Great Hall.
"Right this way then ma'am." Sara gestures and begins to walk away briskly. Quicker she gets the rider to the dorms the quicker Ayla can sleep and she can go fetch Edsel.
